I am super excited to be bringing back a very popular program we ran about 2 years ago with Sephora!  Connect with other young adult cancer survivors in a fun, supportive setting and learn how to address the visible effects of cancer treatments from the comfort of home.  This FREE, live, 60-minute interactive class is led by a Sephora Beauty Expert who will share soothing skincare tips and show you how to restore glow and the appearance of brows or lashes using clean formula products.  The online Brave Beauty Class is limited to 20 participants residing within the US (we’re sorry Canada and beyond!). Click here to learn more about Sephora’s Brave Beauty online tutorials and classes.

Who: 20 young adult cancer patients and survivors

When: Tuesday, May 5th @ 3-4:30 pm PT / 5-6:30 pm CT / 6-7:30 pm ET via video chat.  The skincare class will last an hour and then participants are welcome to stay on for another 30 minutes to spend time connecting with one another.

How does it work? Sign up below, then Lacuna Loft will share your relevant contact information with Sephora so they can send you your Brave Beauty kit of supplies directly.  Then, a few days before the class, Lacuna Loft will send you an email with information on how to join the video chat. ***You’ll need the link that we’ll provide you, the supply kit you receive from Sephora, a headset with a microphone, and a webcam.***

March’s How To Tell Your Story To Make Change Workshop!

microphone

Want to learn to tell your story to help make change?

In a 90 minute, online workshop at Lacuna Loft, we’ll delve into how you can turn your young adult cancer story into advocacy. Advocacy comes in many different shapes and sizes so we’ll talk about what it might mean to you and how to go about shaping your own narrative into the change you want to see around you. The workshop will be interactive and equip you with the skills you need to turn your story into advocacy.

Who: young adult cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers.

When: Thursday, March 19th. 3-4:30 pm PT / 5-6:30 pm CT / 6-7:30 pm ET

How does it work? When you sign up for the workshop, you’ll get a confirmation from the system that you’ve been confirmed into the workshop. Then a few days before the workshop occurs, you’ll get an email from Lacuna Loft explaining how to join the video chat. ***You’ll need the link that we’ll provide you, a headset with a microphone, and a webcam.*** [ The webcam is very important. The workshop will be interactive so the other participants need to be able to see your face! 🙂 ]

What if I’ve taken the workshop already?  At this time, the workshop has not changed in between sessions.  When we have a ‘Round 2’ version of the workshop we’ll be sure to let you know!

How We’re Managing COVID-19

cdc virus graphic

Seriously, how many blogs and emails have you received so far with this same subject line about how so-and-so is dealing with COVID-19 and how it will affect you?  Well, we thought we’d join the bandwagon because COVID-19 is such a hot topic right now.

First and foremost, Lacuna Loft’s online programming is the perfect escape to the stress induced by COVID-19!  You can still take part in 99.9% of our programs from the comfort of your own home with your hand sanitizer close by.  Second of all, over a month ago, we packed and sealed the creative workshop packages that will be used in the next few months (before most of the spread of the virus in the US).  They are ready to be mailed when sign-ups are finalized.  All of that is great news for our community as we all seek to stay as safe and as healthy as possible in the coming months.

Lacuna Loft’s outreach remains the single program directly affected by the virus at this time.  Young Survival Coalition recently postponed their Summit in Los Angeles, CA so we are anxiously awaiting their new dates and will do our very best to be at the conference at its rescheduled time.  The American Psychosocial Oncology Society canceled their annual conference that was to be in Portland, OR this week.  We are waiting to see if the other events we are due to attend this year will happen as scheduled and will update you all as we receive more information.

In the meantime, stay updated with what the CDC has to say about COVID-19 and check out their handwashing recommendations.  Dr. Anne Katz, our resident Awkward Auntie, recently posted on twitter about how relaxing and indulgent handwashing can be with the right mindset and we are taking that to heart!

Join The Next Writing Workshop

computer and notebook

The next session will start on Wednesday, February 26th, meeting each Wednesday at 5 pm PT / 7 pm CT / 8 pm ET for 2 hours via video chat through Wednesday, April 8th.

Our online, Unspoken Ink: Creative Writing Workshop is designed to take you on a journey through your cancer diagnosis and into your survivorship with a small group of your young adult cancer patient/survivor peers. Each 8-week* Writing Workshop consists of a weekly writing night attended via online video chat. We will get to know one another in an intimate, 18 person setting and address issues that transport us from initial diagnosis into the new normal and survivorship.

*This Winter 2020 session will be 7 weeks instead of the normal 8 weeks.

Where: Online video chat. We’ll send you more information about joining after you register. Please have a microphone headset and a webcam.

Who: Young adult cancer patients/survivors and young adult cancer caregivers.

(Lacuna Loft considers anyone diagnosed with cancer, at any stage of the experience, to be a survivor!)

When: The writing group meets for 2 hours each week, for 8 weeks*. A commitment to attend each week is important to group continuity and in creating a safe space. Please be on time 🙂

Interested in joining a one-night version of the writing workshop?  Check out our Open Write Nights!

How does it work:

  • This workshop uses the Amherst Writing and Artists (AWA) Method.  The facilitator provides a writing prompt and you can use that prompt in any way you’d like to create a story over a set amount of time. Once we’ve finished our writing (yes, the facilitator writes too!), everyone is given the opportunity to read their writing out loud. Though sharing is optional, hearing your own story and hearing someone else’s, teaches us about our experiences and our stories. Once the piece is read, we reflect on the writing – what did we like, what stood out, what did we remember. Everything is considered fiction so we do not respond to the writer as a support group may, but keep the focus on the writing.
  • Sometimes the prompts are about cancer, sometimes indirectly related to cancer, and sometimes not about cancer at all. Above all, the writing program emphasizes that we are more than a diagnosis.
  • Following each weekly session, you may decide to submit your writing to Mallory (mallory@lacunaloft.org) for publication on LacunaLoft.org in their Young Adult Voices program section. This is not mandatory!

Sponsored in part by a grant from Servier.
