Have A Summer-Filled Weekend

Spring has been busy at Lacuna Loft.  We went to the YSC Summit in March, CancerCon in April, the Oncology Nursing Society Congress in May, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting in June.  As many of you head into the end of the school year and the start of summer, we’re taking a break on the Young Adult Voices blog for the next month.  We’ll be back on July 16, with more of the great stories and content that you have come to expect from Young Adult Voices.

Our book club will finish in July with a fabulous appearance by the author, Dr. Dan Shapiro, in our (not quite scheduled) online video chat book club discussion.  Look forward to that and SO much more!

Until we are back, enjoy our other programs (try something new with us!) and sift through our numerous archives for anything you might be interested in.  You can even sift by topic directly from our main page by scrolling to the bottom.  We hope you have a great month!  We’ll be over here grant writing, meeting taking, connecting making, letter sending, you name it!

See you soon!

Lacuna Loft Honored By 40 Under 40 In Cancer

chicago skyline

Often, when I write a blog post for Lacuna Loft, I wear my ‘young adult cancer survivor’ hat.  Today though, I’m super proud to wear my ‘CEO of Lacuna Loft’ hat and tell you that I was honored as one of the ’40 Under 40 In Cancer’!  You can read more below about the award and check out the rest of the list of people celebrated too.  One of our volunteers and Board Members, Aerial, was also recognized.  If you’ve experienced one of our Creative Art Workshops, you’ve probably met Aerial.

I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am about this recognition.  It is about so much more than me though…it is about all of us.  It’s about all of the voices and stories that have brought Lacuna Loft to life over the past 4 years.  Thank you.  Please continue showing up and being brave with your voices and your stories.  We gather courage and strength from one another.

You can read more about the award here.

Join A Polymer Clay Vessel Creative Art Workshop!

online creative art workshop

Update:  The creative art workshop is full!  Sign up on the interest form below to be notified when the next one is announced!

Do you enjoy crafts and spending time with other young adult cancer survivors and caregivers?  You’ll love this workshop!

Lacuna Loft’s online Polymer Clay Vessel Workshop is the 11th in our #LetsMakeStuff @LacunaLoft series of online Creative Art Workshops!

This workshop is designed to teach you the basics of making a vessel out of polymer clay. If you’ve never done this before, you’re in luck! Vanessa will go step-by-step through everything! If you love clay and you’re a real pro already, no problem! While some of the tutorial will be more than you need, the rest of the time spent making and being artsy with other young adult cancer peers will be totally worth it. In this workshop, you’ll learn some basic skills of working with polymer clay, how to bake it, and painting your completed piece. We will make a unique piece together and with the skills you’ll learn, you can then move onto making just about anything out of polymer clay!

Who:  15 young adult cancer survivors and caregivers.

When: Monday, May 21st @ 5:30-7:30 pm PT / 7:30-9:30 pm CT / 8:30-10:30 pm ET via video chat.

How does it work?  We’ll send you all of the materials you need to participate!  Lacuna Loft will send you an email about a week before the workshop with information on how to join the video chat.  You’ll need the link that we’ll provide you, a headset with a microphone, and a webcam.

Click here to sign up to be notified when this program is announced by choosing it under ‘Programs you’re interested in.’ (Feel free to choose to be notified when other programs are announced too!)

Lacuna Loft Is Three!

lacuna loft

Lacuna Loft is 3!  It’s been my immense privilege to be a part of Lacuna Loft over the last 3 years.  From the moment we received our nonprofit status, the Board of Directors and I hit the ground running.  With the support of you, our amazing young adult cancer community, we grew Lacuna Loft from a blog to an organization with 12 programs.  Each month we bring together thousands of young adult cancer survivors and caregivers.  You all have shown up in full force, helping one another through all of the hard times and joyful times that young adult cancer bring.  You all are amazing and brave and courageous and Lacuna Loft would not exist without you.

We want to celebrate our nonprofit anniversary with you!  Donate at least $15 and an anonymous donor will match the gift up to $500, doubling your gift to young adult cancer survivors and caregivers!

Volunteer With Lacuna Loft

This week we’re talking about various ways you can get involved at Cactus Cancer Society (formerly Lacuna Loft)!  We provide all of our programs free of charge to young adult cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers.

Wanting a slightly more involved way you can help?  Volunteer with Cactus Cancer Society!  There are so many different ways you can get involved and so many different roles you can play!

We need YOU!

There are several ways to become more involved with Cactus Cancer Society and all the support and resources we provide to young adult cancer survivors and caregivers.

1. Write with the Young Adult Voices blog.
2. Create by leading one of our Creative Workshops. Share a craft or DIY activity that you enjoy, with 10-12 young adult cancer survivors.
3. Lead a book club discussion via video chat.
4. Outreach through social media on behalf of Cactus Cancer Society.
5. Fundraise! Host a game night, hold a raffle, participate in an athletic event and raise money for Lacuna Loft along the way.
6. Make your own volunteer adventure! Have a skill that you could offer Cancer Society? Let us know!

Please know that all of these options include help and guidance (if necessary) from Cactus Cancer Society. We will provide you with support, supplies, and anything else you might need. For more information on each of these options, please contact info@lacunaloft.org.
